Female Hair Loss Treated by Simple Combination Medical Therapy

This female patient was in her 50s and was referred by a friend to Dr. Hawkins regarding her long-standing hair thinning consistent with androgenetic alopecia (female pattern hair loss).

Over several years, she had been evaluated by multiple dermatologists, including hair-loss specialists, and had diligently tried a variety of treatments. These included topical minoxidil, spironolactone, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy — unfortunately, all treatments had produced little meaningful improvement to her hair.

By the time she came to Hair Medicine Institute, she was understandably frustrated and emotionally worn down by the lack of results.

Her hair loss had progressed to the point that she was seriously considering wearing a wig.

The female patient had a receding hairline and temporal hair loss prior to therapy.

This case highlights two critical factors in successful hair restoration: selecting the right treatment and designing a regimen that the patient can realistically maintain long-term.

After a comprehensive evaluation by Dr. Hawkins, she was started on a once-daily oral capsule combining dutasteride and minoxidil, simplifying her routine and improving consistency. At her 6-month follow-up, before-and-after photos showed clear improvement in hair density and coverage.

The patient was thrilled with her results and reported renewed confidence.

She wrote to the person who referred her to Dr. Hawkins:

“I just recently finished 6 months of treatment with minoxidil + dutasteride and I cannot believe the results! I was on the verge of getting a wig and was so upset. My thin hair was aging me, and I just did not look healthy. I felt so sad about it. I will be eternally grateful to you and Dr. Hawkins!”

She is expected to continue improving over the next 6–12 months, with daily maintenance therapy planned to sustain and build on her progress.
